Reflections on 2020 and Looking Ahead

I did a thing and I just wanted you to know that if I can do it, you can too!

It’s been one of the hardest years of most of our lives but looking back, so much growth has come for me personally. I hit a wall this summer but I’ve found a better path and I’m taking my time as I walk it. One thing is for sure, I wasn’t planing on setbacks. Do we ever though? Sometimes they come and I think we’ve all experienced them this year!

I’m learning through the challenges that there are times in life when you just have to do the next right thing and that “thing” might not look the same for everyone. Through it all, I’m so grateful to God for the direction in which he’s led me. It’s been bumpy but I’m pretty sure I needed those speed bumps at just the time I hit them. God is so good in that way! Maybe you’ve been through difficult times too and looking back have felt the same way.

I don’t know what next year will bring but I know this; the valleys in life- they’re promised AND God is bigger than all of it. Whatever your valley looks like, you’re not alone there!

And so…here I am. Tackling the challenges, one hard thing at a time. Taking each difficult day, one day at a time. Trying to be a warrior and not a worrier. Remembering to breathe. Accepting help where I need it. Learning that help doesn’t mean failure or weakness. Trusting God’s design of my life and letting Him take my hand through the valley because I can’t navigate through it without Him.

In the meantime, I’m looking forward to getting back into the studio soon to share more about my journey this year. Hopefully what I’ve walked through will become helpful to someone else through the podcast and my writing. That’s what it’s all about here at The Filter Free Mom anyhow- not being afraid to talk about the hard stuff. It’s what brings all of us imperfect humans together, reminding us that we’re not alone. We’re all struggling in some way and yet we’re not alone! That’s such fantastic news!

As you reflect on your own year and look ahead, maybe feeling overwhelmed or scared by what 2021 could bring with it, remember to take the challenges one day at a time. More importantly, be hopeful. Even when that valley you’re walking through leads you to a mountain. With some help, hard work and a whole lot of God, you will come up over the other side of it and the sun will shine once again. The journey may just look different than you thought it would.

And if you ever get the courage to do a thing like I did, don’t feel ashamed but don’t do it alone either.

Sometimes the courage to do something different…is everything.
